Brief history of the steel drum - The steel drum (steel pan) is the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century. It is made out of a 55 gallon oil barrel (oil drum) and originated in the Caribbean island of Trinidad in the late 1930’s. Around that time, someone discovered that a dented section of the oil barrel head produced a musical tone. Soon after, it was realized that musical notes could be created by using different sized hammers and physically pounding dents into the bottom of the barrel. Once the notes have all been pounded into the drum, it is carefully tuned, blended and then dipped in chrome to make it shine like silver. The steel pan carries the full chromatic range of notes and it is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. See a Video or view other acts. Steel Drum Player Video |
